Poorly pictured lace

I finally finished my shawl, which I've been knitting in secrecy (for no apparent reason, I just forgot to blog it), and I think it turned out alright.

The yarn I used was Jamieson's Ultra, a nice lace weight blend of Shetland and regular wool. Naturally, I wanted to knit a Shetland Shawl - no other option would even have been considered. Ultra was a rather nice yarn to work with, although it smelled horribly, for some reason. The smell of men's perfume (!) was so strong it gave me a headache. After first wash, before blocking, the smell is still there but it isn't so strong anymore.

I find the Print O' The Wave stitch pattern endlessly intriguing, but having already knitted Eunny's version of it, I wanted to knit something different. Sharon Miller's Heirloom Knitting is one of my favorite knitting books, and I found an elaborated version of Print O' The Wave lace pattern and modified it slightly (mine has two "leaves" on the sides instead of three, which is the book version). The edging is also from Heirloom knitting, called the Doris Edging. The only modification to the edging is the turning of the corner, which was quite easy to figure out.

I used 6 balls of yarn and #6 needles for this, and I blocked the shawl to measure roughly 90" x 31" (228 cm x 78 cm). It is very lacy and yet, very warm. I absolutely adore the color, called natural black (it is more of a very dark cold brown, though).

This shawl was knitted in an atypical order for Shetland Shawls. I used provisional cast-on, knitted the first half with the border, and finished it with the shorter side edging which acted also as a cast-off, grafting the ends of the border together. I then knitted the second half similarly. It is not a very sophisticated method, but then again, the knitter of the shawl is not very sophisticated, either.

Huivin kuviot on Heirloom Knittingistä karvan verran muokattuina. Neuloin shetlanninhuiveille poikkeuksellisesti reunuksen huivin keskiosan kanssa, huivin puoliskot päättyivät reunuksen neulomiseen ja reunuksen päiden yhdistämiseen silmukoimalla. Totesin samalla, että pitsin silmukoiminen on viheliäisintä hommaa maailmassa. Ja päätin, että siihen en enää ala.

I realized one thing when finishing this shawl: I absolutely hate grafting lace. I don't mind weaving in ends, or sewing buttons or zippers or grafting cables, but grafting lace makes me mad. Berserk, even. I decided I'd never, ever, graft lace again.

Oh, wait.

Paitsi että..
orenburg swatch
It's an Orenburg Shawl swatch, so I guess this means I'll have to go back to grafting lace with this one. Oh, bugger.

Well, gladly, I have other things to keep me occupied, should I find cobweb weight and #0 and lace too boring a combination. A good book, and plenty of coffee - that'll keep me occupied for hours!

Jos pitsi tökkii, onneksi on muuta tekemistä pienille kätösille. Kuppi kuumaa ja hyvä kirja on mainio tapa viettää iltapäivä..

Or I could just knit these.

(For some reason, I can't get myself to take a ball and cast on. I think I'm a tad afraid my idea will turn out the biggest, fugliest FO of all times, although with this beautiful yarn, I don't think it's possible. I hope posting a picture of the yarn will finally make me cast on and get knitting!)

DH and I drove to Mt Palomar yesterday and took some photos. After Valentine's Day Storm there was some snow, most of it had melted already but there was enough for kids to make their snowmen and adults to load their trucks with snow (a completely unfathomable activity). The cows didn't seem bothered by the snow.

Me käytiin ajelemassa maakunnassa, käytiin Mt Palomarilla asti.

The day was nice, and quite warm, and yet the visibility was surprisingly good at Lake Henshaw (it usually isn't so).

Lake Henshaw'n ympäristö näkyi verraten hyvin, yleensä ilmassa on kaikenlaista sontaa sen verran, että näkyvyys on heikompi. Tämä kuva on otettu vuoren itärinteeltä.

It was very pretty up on the mountain.

Kovin nättiä siellä oli.

But also, the signs of the fires a few months ago were painfully visible.

Viime syksyn metsäpalot verottivat luontoa raskaasti, ja merkit paloista näkyivät puustossa selvästi.

Project Spectrum

I added the Project Spectrum button to my sidebar a few days ago, and I'm looking forward to the whole thing. I've never participated in PS before, so I am excited about it.

I was a little worried I didn't have all the colours for PS, but now, thanks to Kale and Iona, I have everything I need! I sent them a little yarn, and they sent me this giant bunch of absolutely amazing yarn!
my PS
(That's 10 different colors of Ohut Pirkkalanka, one of my favorite fingering weight yarns, and 4 balls of Sisu sockyarn!)

I really don't know what to say, except thank you, girls!

mallitilkku kirjoneuleeseen

I knitted a swatch for a sweater, the yarn is from Ilu. You can probably spot my silly mistake - yes, I will need to flip the order of the colors when knitting to let the darker color dominate (but I guess in a swatch I will not let this bother me). I will cast on for this sweater as soon as I determine which border patterns to use. So far it looks very promising. And needless to say, I love the colors. Ilu really is a genius!

And I played with the layout a little, with the help of a friend. This'll do for a while now. And for those of you, who have no idea what the name is or where it comes from, here's a link to an older post.

Ilu on kyllä ihan nero.
*Äiti on kieltäny kiroilemasta ja Tui keksi vinkeän sanan, siispä mallitilkut on vastedes näytelappuja.

Ja säädin sivupohjaakin vähän. (Pinnat kärsivällisyydestä ja neuvoista Ionalle.) Mennään nyt tällä taas jonkun aikaa. Niille, ketkä ei muista mistä nimi tulee, linkki vanhaan raapustukseen.

Tuesday Socks

I got this Trekking yarn from a friend and couldn't resist the color - I just had to knit it immediately.
tuesday socks 1
I named the socks Tuesday socks because I wrote my fairly obscure notes of the sock on a piece of a page-a-day calender and it happened to be a Tuesday page. (I might have cast on for the socks on a Tuesday, don't remember.) Also, I think Tuesdays are (along with Thursdays) the most boring days of the week, but - like these socks - Tuesdays can be beautiful, even if they are a tad ordinary. (There is no logic to this, I admit.)
tuesday socks 2
It also took me over two weeks to finish these, which seems like forever, but maybe that is because Tuesdays seem to be a lot longer than other days. (This means I should be able to achieve more on Tuesdays but clearly, that is not the case.)
tuesday socks 3
The stitch pattern is just 2 seed sts between 4 stockinette sts, the heel is a slightly modified version of the Baudelaire socks and the cuff ribbing a very basic k1, p2 ribbing, which can be worn the right side up or the wrong side up (which makes it k2, p1 ribbing, of course.). A very boring pair of socks and yet, one of my favorites.

Mie inhoan tiistaita. Ja torstaita. (Torstai on epätoivoa täynnä.)

Still No FOs

Forget everything. Forget I said I'd knit more blocks, forget the fact I got severe startitis and a billion UFOs and WIPs, forget everything. I got yarn yesterday.

ilun pirkat 2

A true master dyed these for me. And I love them, they're perfect.

Mestarivärjääjä-Ilu värjäsi nämä mulle. Ja ne on täydelliset!

The idea is to combine the dark chocolate brown with these amazing hues of teal, turquoise, green, and blue into a stranded project. I haven't decided the pattern yet. I had Venezia Pullover in my mind, and Donegal, and a couple of other projects, but I don't know. Right now, I just sit and admire these beautiful skeins.
